Are you out prepping your beds for spring? We are taking every moment we can to escape to the garden with hoes, shovels, and snips in hand dreaming of sunshine and buckets of blooms. The greenhouse is packed with soil blocks tucked in their trays, heat mats encouraging little seeds to sprout, and the occasional sneaky frog hiding under a dome. This is the time of hard work, lots of prayers and fingers crossed for gentle weather, and the occasional checking in with Grandma Peggy for what the Farmer's Almanac says should be the ideal planting, pruning or destroy weed days. Her father always planted his fields by the Almanac. Great Uncle Teddy always planned his planting of greenhouse baskets by the same calendar. Maybe they were on to something.
Important tasks to put on the list for spring are:
Spray compost tea weekly to prevent pests getting a good start
Prune carefully according to blooming needs of shrubs
Watch for praying mantis and other beneficial insect eggs while doing clean up
Leave a fair amount of leaf littler and mulch in place, we still have some cold nights ahead
Feed your roses and other waking blooming bushes and vines
And be sure to collect some blooms to bring in and brighten your home!
Have a blessed spring,
Becca
